Roasting can be an explosion - but it can also be messy, time consuming and, sometimes, aggravating (as when step 5 says adding buttermilk and you think, Oh, should I buy buttermilk?).

Make life easier with these truly legitimate shortcuts, exchanges and tricks. You will look and feel like the best cake chef in town.

1. Cut the Cheesecake with Yarn

If you've ever wondered how a restaurant reaches the perfect cheesecake slice, take a piece of dental floss without taste. Position on the cake; then, while holding it tight, press down on the cake with a gentle sawing motion. You will get a clean cut every time.

2. Change the Ordinary Sugar to Confectionery Sugar

Sometimes you need powdered sugar and all you get is sugar. You can be foiled ... or you can pour ordinary sugar into a blender or food processor. Blend at high speed until the sugar reaches the consistency of fine powder. Bam, you have sweets sugar!
